In the Alfândega Porto Congress Centre on the banks of the River Douro, Costa added that the agreement reached “is one of the greatest lessons that the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us: contrary to the norm in major crises, this pandemic has not generated selfishness, but rather it has developed a sense of community in each country, all across Europe. This time, we were all fully aware that only by protecting each other could we protect ourselves”, he added.
The Prime Minister pointed out that the social partners — the main European organisations representing employers and workers — not only signed the Porto Social Commitment, but they also took part in its preparation.
In the document, the signatories agree that “it is time to deliver in order to collectively ensure and support an ambitious agenda for economic and social recovery and modernisation”, one that is “strong, sustainable and inclusive, so that all citizens can benefit from the twin green and digital transitions and live with dignity”.
To meet the goals of the Action Plan for the European Pillar of Social Rights, the commitment proposes joining “forces” in order to implement inclusion, sustainability and job creation policies.
