Building a sustainable expert network
The training forms part of a broader capacity-building partnership between the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights, University of Oslo (NCHR) and the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria. The initiative aims to develop a core group of experts and scholars in Sub-Saharan Africa to lead research, teaching, and advocacy on Business and Human Rights (BHR), addressing gaps in academic knowledge and institutional capacity.
Regional approach
The hybrid training in Nairobi, which took place 9-14 March, included more than 70 participants (40 online) from countries such as Nigeria, Malawi, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Rwanda. Initiatives to develop regional instruments on BHR through the African Union received special attention throughout the training workshop.
Multi-stakeholder collaboration

A key feature of the Nairobi training was the collaboration with the African Coalition for Corporate Accountability (ACCA). This element strengthened the training by introducing specialized sessions with representatives from national human rights commissions, civil society, and the corporate sector addressing the “implementation gap” between human rights norms and business practices. Experts from Norway and Switzerland also contributed to sessions on labour rights and the use of AI and technology in research and education.
Networking and Embassy reception
The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Nairobi graciously hosted an evening reception for the NCHR delegation and participants in the training. This welcome break from an intensive study week provided an excellent opportunity to network with Norwegian, Kenyan, and international experts and institutions, and to discuss new partnerships and possibilities for continued cooperation on business and human rights in Africa.
