The Asia-Pacific region faces unprecedented environmental challenges requiring coordinated responses and synergistic approaches to climate change, biodiversity loss and land degradation, as well as pollution and waste. Research demonstrates that fragmented approaches to environmental governance and policy implementation often result in missed opportunities for leveraging cross-thematic linkages and synergies. The Asia-Pacific region, home to 4.1 billion people and encompassing diverse economic and environmental contexts, offers unique opportunities to demonstrate collaborative approaches to the implementation of multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs).

The United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA), through its resolution 6/4, adopted in March 2024, recognized that synergies, cooperation, and collaboration in the implementation of MEAs can maximize co-benefits and improve resource efficiency. It also encouraged countries to enhance knowledge and understanding of potential co-benefits while collecting and sharing good practices to foster international cooperation. Within this context, this side event will provide an opportunity to share progress in implementing UNEA resolution 6/5 in Asia-Pacific, as well as collaborative efforts for MEA implementation in the region.
