The Awards recognize exemplary efforts by individuals and organizations to restore or conserve structures, places, or properties of heritage value in the region. Winning projects demonstrate a thorough understanding of the place, sound technical achievement, and outstanding sustainability impact.

Eligible projects must have been completed within the last 10 years. Houses, commercial and institutional buildings, historic towns and villages, and archaeological sites and cultural landscapes are all suitable for entry.

Winners are announced annually in the following categories: Award of Excellence, Award of Distinction, Award of Merit, Award for New Design in Heritage Contexts, and an additional award (which may be won separately or in addition to another) of Special Recognition for Sustainable Development. The award of ‘Special Recognition for Sustainable Development’ and an updated set of awards criteria  were introduced in 2020 to expressly acknowledge the role and contribution of cultural heritage to sustainable development within the broader framework of Agenda 2030.

The new deadline for submission of online applications is 31 July 2023.

Please take into account the extra time that it may take for your hardcopy dossier to reach the UNESCO Bangkok office, mailing it as promptly as possible. For your submission to be considered complete for the 2023 awards cycle, please note the following guidelines:

1. Online applications are due by 31 July.

2. Hardcopy dossiers must be postmarked no later than 31 July.
