In September 2015, all UN member States adopted the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals: 17 interrelated goals and 169 associated targets to promote economic, social and environmental development. In Target 8.7, all countries committed to:
TARGET 8.7 Take immediate and effective measures to eradicate forced labour, end modern slavery and human trafficking and secure the prohibition and elimination of the worst forms of child labour, including recruitment and use of child soldiers, and by 2025 end child labour in all its forms
Achieving Target 8.7 requires working across organizations and borders. It will be achieved by working closely with partners focused on SDG Targets 5.2, 16.2, 16.3 and 16.a. Alliance 8.7 provides a platform for partners to come together to share information, promising practices, lessons learnt, and to demonstrate progress. Partners include countries, international and regional organizations, workers’ organizations, employer and business membership organizations, civil society organizations, academic institutions and other relevant stakeholders and networks
ALLIANCE 8.7 IS AN INCLUSIVE GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP COMMITTED TO ACHIEVING TARGET 8.7 OF THE 2030 SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS.
Strategic Objectives
- Accelerating action
- Conducting research and sharing knowledge
- Driving innovation and leveraging resources
The Terms of Reference formulate the mission statement and the key objectives of the Alliance, briefly describe its organizational structure and means of action, the role of partners and pathfinder countries and establishes the composition and key functions of the Global Coordinating Group and the Secretariat. The Pathfinder Countries Guidance Note provides more detailed information on the roles, responsibilities and opportunities for Pathfinder Countries.
HOW IS ALLIANCE 8.7 ORGANIZED?
While many countries and organizations are taking active steps to achieve Target 8.7, there is an urgent need for coordinated global action. The Alliance brings together actors at all levels to collaborate, strategize, share knowledge and ultimately accelerate progress so we can deliver on this commitment by 2030. The strength of the Alliance lies in the diversity of its partners and their commitment to reaching across borders and meeting the challenges together.
ABOUT THE ISSUE:
MODERN SLAVERY
As of 2016, over 40 million people from every part of the globe were victims of modern slavery.
CHILD LABOUR
As of 2016, there were almost 152 million children, aged 5 to 17, in child labour across the world.
“Modern slavery” is an umbrella term that covers forced labour, forced marriage and human trafficking. The common thread is that a person is being exploited, and cannot refuse or leave due to threats, violence, coercion, deception, manipulation and/or the abuse of power.
Not all work performed by children is child labour. International standards define “child labour” as work that is hazardous to a child’s health and development, demands too many hours and/or is performed by children who are too young. Usually, child labour interferes with a child’s right to education and to healthy childhood play.
